Week 2 — No Comply — Dates, Casting Call, Script

We spent the first week meeting and developing a plan for the rest of the semester. There were some things we needed to work out and talk about in order to get started on production. We worked well in coming up with solutions on how we could get this project completed on a time crunch. We are planning out when to have weekly meetings apart from class. We sent out a casting call to lots of agencies in Honolulu and have received a lot of responses. We have contacted U-Haul and gathered more information about renting from them. We have looked into obtaining a permit for shooting on the street and can apply when the location is specified. Maia is working on the script and then we will be reviewing it and discussing it at our next meeting. We are working on a draft of the budget. And because of scheduling conflicts we need to work out shooting dates relative to our DP and within the time frame we have to shoot and still do a good edit by April/May. We will be meeting again all together before class this week to discuss. We will be setting up audition times. And we will also be discussing our pitch presentation and proposal draft.

Week 2 — Maia Goel — Script Revisions, Casting Call, Organizing, etc.

This week I was working on meeting with everyone and confirming crew. I also worked with Mahina to get a casting call sent out. And personally was working on revising the script to be mostly locked. I also met with Chloe to discuss availability and equipment. We also decided as a group that it would be better to shoot in March and give us more time to better prepare which everyone was very open to. Chloe is the only one that may have scheduling conflicts now.

Week 2 — Mahina Smith — Casting Call, Permitting

This week was really focused on casting. Maia perfected the logline and character write-ups so I sent out the casting call to different agencies. We received a good amount of responses so we will begin to set up audition times soon. We will have to cast based on the children then see if we can match a father to their looks. Zach and I have talked more about the permitting process so we will submit that permit when we nail down dates. I am still a little worried about the time sensitive shooting schedule, but we are scheduled for meetings outside of class to make our deadlines.

Week 2- Colton Book- Gaffer & Co-Editor

This week I tried to focus more on editing than on gaffing, although both have been on my mind. I have been trying to come up with ways to match cut the two time periods by analyzing thescript so that I can pitch my ideas to the director before it’s too late in the process for it tohappen. In the production meeting today, we came up with a final edit deadline, talked aboutmovies we want it to look like, along with music selection and overall tone. We also spoke abouthow we’re going to split up the duties of editing between two editors. As for gaffing, we talked about the color of the film that Maia wants to convey and the films she gave me to reference. I pushed a little bit to finalize the dates because I wanted to make sure I have time to request them off for work but also so that we can establish a timeline for our technical tests and I can give thedates to the grips with plenty of time for them to prepare for the dates. I think that our group isdoing well in working together and I’m excited for our principal photography and postproduction.

Week 2 — Ciana Bird — More in Depth

This week was the week I felt I got a more in depth look into what this film represents and the overall tone of it which helps with coming up ideas for editing. Colton brought up to use match cutting between timelines that would really help with the distinction that there are two timelines. I really liked the idea and hope that more stylistic choices like that pop up. I’m excited to see what comes up in the next few weeks.

Week 2 – Zachary Smith – Uhaul, Street Permit

This week, I spoke to U-Haul to iron out the details of renting their moving van. I estimated that we would pick up the van each Friday at 1pm, and return it 11am the following Monday. Thankfully, the additionally price based on mileage will be mostly negligible, because we would be driving it a total of 4-5 miles each weekend. Further, anyone is allowed to drive it (as long as they have a license).
