Week 6—No Comply-Casting, Lighting and Production Design, Meetings, New Script!

Week six consisted of meetings between Maia and her main crew. She met with Zach and Mahina to go over casting and budget. Then separately with Ciana and Colton to go over production design and lighting. Maia researched how to reallocate funding from UROP since we would not be getting the camera from the media center. Mahina and Maia attempted to search for a white child that could play the role of young Cleveland. They looked through extras on the cast of “Losing William.” Zach finished the street permit and looked at scheduling now that the final script was up. Maia readded flashbacks, but cut a friend character.

Week 6-Colton Book- Meeting, Editing Workshops & Practical Lighting

This week I made an effort to improve my editing efficiency. I edit twice a week and my internship but this week I edited two additional times to practice my editing skills, to make sure I can move quickly while we’re editing. Ciana, Maia and I also met to talk about our lighting design, and how production design can play a role in finding practical lighting, so we don’t have to use all artificial. We also had issues with the media center and equipment rentals which is annoying, but it seems like we are going to get everything we want.

Week 6-Maia Goel-Script revisions, meetings, choosing actors, etc.

This week I made a lot of progress on the script to the point where I feel good about it. I’m struggling to be done because I feel like it’s going to continue to be a work in progress. But when I met with Kristle this week we talked a lot about the script, shots, look of the film, and equipment. We decided that instead of going shot by shot we wanted to nail down the story and make sure we were on the same page so we did this and it was very helpful. I am in the process of finishing these edits right now. I also met with Zach and Mahina over the weekend to discuss locations, funding, food, and schedule. And then I met with Colton and Ciana during the week to discuss lighting, equipment, and production design. For production design we are looking to really focus on the set in the past for changing the look. Ciana and I are going to do a location scout this Friday to look at what needs the most design. And we planned out a day to do a test shoot with lights and camera. I also met with Kimani this week to discuss sound and the equipment he will need. There have been some bumps we have hit with checking out equipment because they are making things a little difficult since our DP is an alumni but I am trying to work something out with them and we will most likely end up renting from HMI. I will be casting the roles I know this weekend and then we are looking in the actor database for a dad.

Week 6—Mahina Smith—Casting (again), food on set

This was a very busy week for me. I was trying to confirm my subject, interpreter, and location, for my documentary shoot this week. But, I was also working on casting for “No Comply.” We are still on the search for a Young Cleveland that will match the white Beth and Present Cleveland that we found. We also haven’t found a white father to match as well. I emailed some of the extras on “Losing William” to see if they would be interested in a larger role in this film. We got a few responses so I need to set up auditions with them. We looked for a father on the Actors Database and Maia is still making a decision on whether to reach out. Maia and I discussed food on set, and one thing is clear: No Pizza. We want our crew to have a good variety of meals. We are looking at Thai to avoid breaking any dietary restrictions, as well as Da Spot which has catered sets in the past.

Week 6 – Ciana Bird – Continuing On

This week Maia, Colton, and I had our first individual meeting to discuss and focus on lighting, editing, and production design. We also got updates of where everything else is going in pre-production. We’re trying to see if we might need any additional programs to enhance the film when it comes to editing such as DaVinci, but we’ll see. In addition, Maia and I are going to the location on Friday to get an idea of what is going to be needed to to help with the idea of having to timelines.

Week 6-Zachary Smith-Permits, Script Revision, Crew

The most important thing I did this week was finalize the street permit and submit it to the City & County permit office. During my meeting with. Maia and Mahina, we added weather days (in April), as the permit office has asked me for those in the past. I highly doubt we end up using them, but better to be safe and cover our butts! My one worry is that the proposed wrap time (12 am) is too late, and they ask me to make it earlier.

I recruited Kyle Motonaga for sound, and Leslie Dam as boom operator.

I also made some notes on the screenplay to contribute to Maia’s final big revision. We realized we will probably need a permit for a park, so I’ve started to brainstorm locations (as well as the potential permit). Also, it turns our Mahina has StudioBinder! So I will tinkering with it this coming week. Finally, now that the final script is up, I will work on drafting a schedule.
