We finished shooting! After a second exhausting weekend, we finished. Notable points from the weekend, equipment can be unreliable, we sent Lisette to the wrong location…twice (we are SO sorry), and we will have no reshoots because the coronavirus has put us all under quarantine. Shooting went well given the circumstances. Yes, we ran long a few nights and yes nerves were running quite high, but overall I think it turned out alright. Colton said the footage looks good even if the sound was off for a few shots. A few of us will be leaving the island, so communication is key going forward.
Maia Goel-Budget updates & moving into post production
Sorry I haven’t been involved in these blog posts but SHOOTING WENT GREAT! We were able to accomplish so much and I am so proud of all of the hard work this group has put into this project. And we are done with shooting, so yay! Things have been a little hectic these past few weeks and now with corona virus, even more so. I am off island now so that makes things a little more difficult but Ciana, Colton, and I were able to figure out how to make it work with the edit.
We also met the past week a few times in person to watch all dailies and choose our favorites takes. This was super helpful and we were able to come up with a way to split up the work for now.
I worked on paying everyone back and calculating all expenses regarding budget. Now I just need to get money reallocated for UROP so we are covered. We stayed just under budget which was awesome to see so I am very happy about that and we had a lot of unexpected costs so I was surprised by this. And I am excited to keep working on the edit in the coming months!
Colton- No Comply- Production and Post
Production kicked off really well. We worked well as a team and although there were a few bumps throughout the process, I feel like our end product is something for us to be proud of. We also got extremely lucky that we were able to get all of our shooting finished before the Media Center closed for good. On set, I was the gaffer and I think that this is my best work yet, in that position. I was doing multiple lighting changes per day and was working with a great team of grips. Now that we are in post prodution, I turned the raw footage into proxies, synconized all the audio to the footage and strung it together in sequences based on the scenes. Ciana and I split up the work load. She is editing the present and I am editing the past. I think it’s working well so far and we figured out a way to do it completely remotely so that we don’t have to meet up during the virus.

Mahina-No Comply-Set Forms to SAG
Set was stressful. It’s amazing to me how stressors all seem to hit at once. Shooting taking place the same week the coronavirus hits which is the same week my grandfather had internal bleeding. I really tried to be on set the same amount of time I would have been if my grandfather was not in the hospital. I ran an hour late to set Friday when he was moved to the ICU for internal bleeding and I left set for an hour on Sunday to visit him before surgery. I didn’t want my group to feel like I was bailing out on anything. Which they didn’t think at all. They were so completely understanding and I really appreciated that. Friday evening, I think I let myself feel all the stress at once and I had a small breakdown, but Maia and Colton were really able to talk me down.
My next step is to submit all of the forms to SAG. I have all of the forms, but I am currently going through them to make sure they are completely filled out. I have all of the signatures, but some information might need to be filled in. SAG contacted us to check if we were still filming with the coronavirus and I told them no, and I’d get the forms to them within the next few days.
Ciana- No Comply- Design & Editing
Set was a really good experience and probably one of my favorite ones to be on. Everyone was working really well together although there were some setbacks especially when changing locations. I think all the trouble was worth it though as we are now in post production. Being art director was a first for me and with Maia’s expertise in production design I think we worked together pretty well as I think we had the same type of vision for the way things were to look.
Now being in post, Maia, Colton, and I were luckily able to all meet up a couple times before we go separate ways to go over dallies and see a first rough cut of the edit. I’m definitely taking some organization tips from Colton. I’m very excited to see where this goes. I think the projects looking very good already and I can’t wait. It’ll be interesting for all of us to do this in different areas, but I think we have the communication to make it work.
