Week 11-No Comply-Editing, how does this go together?

Maia, Colton, and Ciana have been zooming to try to figure out how to edit this experimental film. It is hard because its so different from the standard film editing that we usually do. We need to find an order to put the clips in, especially where to stick the flash backs. The editors are trying hard to get the film where Maia wants it to be, but it is hard working from three very different places.

Week 11-Mahina Smith-COVID-19 FREE, paperwork

Good News! Malia is NEGATIVE for the COVID-19 so no “hey guys just to let you know” emails. Not much to report for this week. I’ve been locked in my room all week. I have been scanning papers for the project, but the printer is broken at my house and I might order one online to replace it. I still need to contact actors for a few more details on their forms. Excited to see what everyone is presenting today 

Maia Goel-Editing process, organizing scenes, order of scenes, UROP budget revisions

This week I met with Colton and Ciana a few times and really like what I have been seeing as far as the edit goes. We have a lot to do but I think from here on out we are going to be solidifying an order and playing with the edit. This will be collaborative but I think for the initial draft I am going to give them more guidance or at least an outline of where things should go. It’s difficult editing an experimental film because there isn’t one way to order it. We are working with what we have and with that I think there are different possibilities and it doesn’t have to stick to how I outlined it before we shot, a lot has changed since then. So I have been working on that while still meeting with them to see how we can progress our rough cut in the mean time. We also spent some time trying to see if we could create a collaborative project in adobe cloud because we weren’t sure if our current method was the best way, but I think it is for now.

I also put together budget revisions for UROP and got them approved, so YAY. We won’t have to give back any money. Budget-wise we are doing well, but may be nice to fundraise for film festivals, DCP, color correcting, etc.

Ciana Bird – Options

Maia, Colton, and I have been zooming to be able to move forward with the editing process. I think for now we mostly have our scenes edited, but with us going the experimental route everything could change. The next challenge is figuring out where exactly everything is going to go and how this story is going to be told. We all tried to brainstorm a little bit, but because we have a lot of footage it was hard to just imagine where everything was going to go. I’m glad that our problem is that and not having enough footage! Maia’s most likely going to lay out an outline of where we might put clips which is nice because I want this story to be what she envisions the most. I think we’re moving along nicely though considering everything we’ve all been through in the past couple weeks.

Colton – Editing our scenes

This week our main focus was editing our scenes together. I think this is going to help us determine where things are going to go on the timeline. We may not use the versions we cut together but I think that this gives us an opportunity to get more creative with the editing process. I like to get creative while I’m editing but it scares me when I’m editing a film like this because the amount of options could confuse us as a collaborative team. My hope is that we stay on the same page however I am trying to be careful with sticking my neck out and offering suggestions because I’ve never edited like this before. Although I do have some fears about editing in this way, I feel like Ciana and I work well together as editors because I think we have similar values when it comes to editing. I think Ciana, Maia and I have a similar vision on how it is going to turn out which gives me a lot of confidence to continue editing in the way we are doing it.
